Assessing the Performance of LISFLOOD-FP and SWMM for a Small Watershed with Scarce Data Availability

Flooding events are becoming more frequent and the negative impacts that they causing globally very significant. Current predictions have confirmed conditions linked with future climate scenarios worsening; therefore, there is a strong need to improve flood risk modeling develop innovative approaches tackle this issue. However, numerical tools available nowadays (commercial freeware) essential data for calibration validation purposes and, regrettably, cannot always be provided in every country dissimilar reasons. This work aims examine quality capabilities of open-source their preparation process situations where datasets may poor or not at all. For purpose, EPA’s Storm Water Management Model (SWMM) was selected investigate 1D LISFLOOD-FP chosen 2D modeling. The simulation results obtained freeware products showed both models reasonably capable detecting features such as critical points, flooding extent, water depth. although working them challenging than commercial products, relative reference map acceptable. Therefore, study demonstrated SWMM can cope lack these variables starting point has steps undertake generate reliable required, which estimation likelihood occurrence.
